Tourist boards tell tales of the towns
Ten market towns in South Somerset have received information boards pointing out the towns’ best attractions as part of a scheme headed by South Somerset District Council.
The Market Towns Investment Group –set up by the district council and its partners to strengthen the links between local towns – has been busy putting the boards in place outside town halls and car parks for visitors and locals to benefit from.
The boards include a map of the whereabouts of the local services, from post offices to local walks, places of historical interest and museums, along with defining facts and photographs of the towns.
Cllr Kim Turner, South Somerset District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Market Towns and Chairman of the group says, “I am proud to see the final board of this grand project put into place. They are a positive step towards linking our fascinating historical market towns together – each board tells the reader about attractions in other towns to encourage wider tourism in the area, which can only be a good thing.
“The boards are unique to each town, flagging up the quirky sites and popular attractions of the area – things like old coaching houses, wineries and lace mills.
“I’m sure these will go a long way to encouraging more tourist interest in our market towns and will be welcomed by locals as a smart new addition to their town.
“The Market Towns Investment group has members from all over the district and we all work together for everyone to benefit.”
42 interpretation boards have been put into place in Chard, Crewkerne, Ilminster, South Petherton, Ilchester, Martock, Somerton, Langport, Castle Cary, Bruton and Wincanton since December.
The Market Towns Investment Group is made up of keen advocates from market town areas across the district, including town and district councillors, regeneration groups and representatives from Somerset County Council and the Somerset Market Towns Forum.
