Frome given 250,000 pounds cash boost from local resident

From BBC website - Frome has been given £250,000 from a wealthy resident who wants to encourage economic growth in the area.

The anonymous donor moved to Frome last year and has been so impressed with the town that he is giving £50,000 per year for five years to help local business.

A new group - the Frome Development Community Interest Company - has been set up to distribute the money.

Chair Mary Phillips said the donor had been "bowled over by the 'buzzyness' and independent nature of Frome".

'Interesting ideas'

The group's remit is to offer funding to individuals, groups and organisations to enable them to undertake specific projects and initiatives.

"We don't want to get our hands on doing the work ourselves but to channel that funding to people who have got interesting ideas but they lack little bits of money just to take it forward," said Dr Phillips.

"Some of the early ideas we are looking at are, for example, purchasing some land in Frome to develop an allotment site.

"We are also working with the Chamber of Commerce on a website portal which businesses can sign up to - a sort of one-stop-shop to promote your businesses - and thinking about ideas for regenerating the Wednesday and Saturday markets in Frome as well."
